Why is There a Furry?

Oh no. Is this a furry comic? Well, let’s talk about that.

Let’s cast our view back in time, about three hundred thousand years. It’s an eyeblink in geological or cosmological terms, but for cultures and societies, it’s a long time. Homo Sapiens is the new kid on the block and if you’ll pardon the pun, new flint knapping techniques are cutting edge technology.

And yet, where one society has not yet risen, another has not yet fallen. All of what we now call Charted Space is ruled by an alien civilization that we know only by the name we’ve given them: The Ancients.

The Ancients have technology far in advance of anything available in the era of the comic, and one of the things they do for their own inscrutable reasons is seed life across the galaxy. They apparently see something they like in earth, because they scoop up samples of early humanity and seed them onto maybe a hundred worlds.

They also pick up some wolves from earth, and through their mastery of genetic manipulation, uplift the wolves into sapient beings, and drop them off on a planet some distance from earth to form their own society.

Fast forward three hundred thousand years, and the Ancients are gone, but descendants of those uplifts have formed a spacefaring society, and they call themselves Vargr. They are counted among the “major races” of Charted Space because they have the rare distinction of discovering FTL travel for themselves.

And, after thousands of years of interstellar travel, they’re spread almost as widely as humans. Sure, they have their own nation off on the borders of Imperial space, but there are also plenty of Vargr living happy lives as Imperial citizens, with family history in Imperial space going back at least as far as the Long Night.

So, yes. The Vargr are quite literally bipedal talking wolves, and for good or ill, you can call that “furry”.
